It seems like George Lucas initially went to great lengths to convey the idea that Palpatine was planting the seeds of distrust in Anakin, but then removed multiple mentions of this idea in the editing room.<\/p>\n
Palpatine shares his feelings about Padm\u00e9 with Anakin, like that she’s hiding certain things. He tells Anakin that Obi-Wan like is clouded by emotions and can’t do his job correctly. He hints that the Sith and the Jedi are really not all that different (although some of this last item did end up in the film).<\/p>\n
I quite enjoy all the tension of a possible love triangle, especially when it doesn’t exist except in someone’s paranoid mind. The talk of a love triangle goes way back to before Episode I<\/em> and while it was mostly fan speculation, it really resonated well with the fans. I’m glad Lucas threw in some sort of reference to it, even if it’s just in the published script.<\/p>\n 100 EXT. CORUSCANT-CITYSCAPE-CHANCELLOR’S TRANSPORT-DAY<\/strong> PALPATINE ANAKIN PALPATINE ANAKIN They exit the landing platform.<\/em><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 101 INT. CORUSCANT-SENATE OFFICE BUILDING-MAIN HALLWAY-DAY JAR JAR The Gungan waves to Anakin.<\/em><\/p>\n ANAKIN JAR JAR Anakin turns back to the Chancellor.<\/em><\/p>\n PALPATINE ANAKIN PALPATINE ANAKIN PALPATINE ANAKIN PALPATINE ANAKIN becomes worried.<\/em><\/p>\n PALPATINE <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n OBI-WAN TALKS TO PADM\u00c9<\/strong><\/p>\n In the finished film, there’s a moment where Anakin asks Padm\u00e9 if Obi-Wan has been to her apartment. Anakin can sense that he’s been there, and perhaps this is one of Anakin’s little tests to see if his wife would dare lie to him, but she doesn’t. She has nothing to lie about and Anakin, for the moment, appears relieved.<\/p>\n The truth is, as Padm\u00e9 states, Obi-Wan was<\/em> there that morning to talk to her. Obi-Wan is once again concerned for his friend who seems very shaken up and unbalanced lately. He’s a smart guy and knows what’s up with Padm\u00e9 and Anakin, so he goes to see her. Of course, like a typical politician, she plays dumb and doesn’t confirm anything, but she doesn’t really have to at this point. There’s a friendly, unspoken, agreement in the air.<\/p>\n That is a pretty rough position to be in, though. Given everything Obi-Wan had been through up to that point in the story, she finally realizes that he has no reason to lie about such weighty subject matter. She just doesn’t want to admit it. That’s why she has to go to Mustafar to see for herself and talk to Anakin in person.<\/p>\n Here’s the dialogue from the scene:<\/p>\n 93 EXT. CORUSCANT-PADME’S APARTMENT-EARLY MORNING 94 INT. CORUSCANT-PADME’S APARTMENT-LIVING ROOM-EARLY MORNING OBI-WAN PADME OBI-WAN They laugh.<\/em><\/p>\n PADME OBI-WAN PADME OBI-WAN PADME OBI-WAN studies her.<\/em><\/p>\n OBI-WAN PADME OBI-WAN PADME OBI-WAN PADME is a little flustered. She stands and Obi-Wan follows. She walks to the balcony.<\/em><\/p>\n PADME OBI-WAN PADME looks down and doesn’t answer.<\/em><\/p>\n OBI-WAN They stand on the balcony and look off at the early morning city. OBI-WAN starts to leave. PADME stays looking off into the distant city.<\/em><\/p>\n OBI-WAN PADME OBI-WAN Note that in the comic version, Mace Windu interrupts to tell Obi-Wan that Grievous has been located on Utapau. This is not in the script dialogue.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n LOVE AND MARRIAGE<\/strong><\/p>\n Let’s start off with some alternate dialogue from the published screenplay. I like how Padm\u00e9 teases Anakin a little and how he makes it known that he can “sense” something is up, and not by simply noticing it in her normal demeanor.<\/p>\n Anakin’s jealousy is introduced here, a thread that continues in the film, but most of the evidence was ultimately deleted from the film. After reading these bits a few times, they do come off as a little wordy, so I can understand why much of it was dropped. It takes Padm\u00e9 a little too long to spit out that she’s pregnant. They seem to go back and forth a little too much before that.<\/p>\n ANAKIN stops, and BAIL goes off after PALPATINE and the others. ANAKIN goes behind one of the giant columns to meet up with the SHADOWY FIGURE, who is revealed to be SENATOR PADME AMDALA. They embrace and kiss. <\/em><\/p>\n PADME ANAKIN PADME ANAKIN ANAKIN starts to give her another kiss. She steps back.<\/em><\/p>\n PADME He grabs her again.<\/em><\/p>\n ANAKIN PADME ANAKIN PADME ANAKIN embraces her, then looks at her.<\/em><\/p>\n ANAKIN PADME ANAKIN PADME ANAKIN PADME begins to cry.<\/em><\/p>\n PADME ANAKIN PADME ANAKIN PADME ANAKIN PADME They look at each other for a long moment.<\/em><\/p>\n PADME ANAKIN is stunned. He thinks through all of the ramifications of this. He takes her in his arms.<\/em><\/p>\n ANAKIN PADME A lot of people had a problem with the following scene as it appeared in the film. The whole Anakin\/Padm\u00e9 love story was a double-edged sword for Lucas. It needed to exist but seemed as if it was painful for him to write – and some would say painful to listen to. Personally, I had no issues with the whole thing in Episode III<\/em>.\u00a0 Episode II<\/em>, on the other hand, had a few awkward moments that didn’t feel natural to me.<\/p>\n I’m not sure if the extra lines below would have helped or hindered the scene. If it helped it, then great, but if not it would have made a scene that wasn’t well received even longer and potentially worse for those who don’t like that sort of thing. I do remember hearing a few groans while in the theater.<\/p>\n Here’s the famous balcony scene with a few extra lines:<\/p>\n 73 INT. CORUSCANT-PADME’S APARTMENT-TWILIGHT ANAKIN PADME ANAKIN PADME ANAKIN PADME ANAKIN PADME They laugh.<\/em><\/p>\n ANAKIN PADME I’m going to group the next two scenes together since they’re slightly related and very short. All that’s happening here, once again, are just simple dialogue omissions. Whether or not they were filmed, I can’t say for sure but they’re in the script so for the sake of completeness, I’m including them here.<\/p>\n The first is the first dream sequence in the film and the second is what takes place shortly afterward. The first has some extra dialogue and even goes as far as to mention Padm\u00e9 dying. The second just has an extra line and mentions that Padm\u00e9 goes downstairs, which we don’t see in that shot but do see in the next one where Anakin is on the veranda thinking. No big deal, like I said.<\/p>\n 74 INT. POLIS MASSA-MEDICAL CENTER-DREAM PADME She screams and dies.<\/em><\/p>\n She gets out of bed and goes downstairs to look for him.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n Next is a short exchange between the two lovers that seems to have been lifted from the final cut. It’s a subtle hint of the distrust that’s been growing between Obi-Wan and Anakin. Of course, Anakin’s worries are needless since Obi-Wan figured out about their baby on his own and still didn’t rat them out. Here, when Padm\u00e9 asks if Obi-Wan can be of help to them, Anakin puts the idea out of her head and instructs her to keep quiet:<\/p>\n PADME ANAKIN PADME ANAKIN PADME ANAKIN The next scene is quite long but is an extended version of an already existing scene. Interestingly enough, quite a bit was trimmed out, especially from the beginning. Captain Typho and handmaiden Mote\u00e9 both have a line, plus C-3PO offers his services. All the while, the shadowy figure of Anakin is lurking in the background. He pops out and startles Padm\u00e9.<\/p>\n In the finished film, we come into this scene just as Anakin is saying the line, “Sometimes I wonder what’s happening to the Jedi Order…” That’s about halfway in. If you watch the establishing shot closely, it does seem to cover part of the deleted dialogue, although it’s silent. Anakin is feeling Padm\u00e9’s stomach and the two seem to be laughing.<\/p>\n What I like about this scene as it is written (as opposed to what’s in the film) is that it reinforces the fact that Anakin and Padm\u00e9 still have to sneak around and meet up in clandestine ways. He just sort of pops out of the shadows and then disappears, like Dracula. He probably has his own quarters in the Jedi Temple but sleeps at her place from time to time. They can’t be seen living together. That’s what makes the veranda convenient – he can come and go without using the door. I wonder where all the Star Wars paparazzi are?<\/p>\n I like the bit at the end where Anakin tells Padm\u00e9 that he feels there’s something she’s keeping from him, and then she says the same thing back to him. I’m not certain why this was taken out. It makes the current edit seem jumpy and not flow smoothly. In the film, she says that he should let her help him and then all of the sudden she just wants to hug. It’s a little odd but it works, I guess.<\/p>\n Here’s the version from the published script:<\/p>\n 87 EXT. CORUSCANT-PADME’S APARTMENT-VERANDA-SUNSET<\/strong> PADME CAPTAIN TYPHO CAPTAIN TYPHO gets back into the Speeder, and it disappears into the cityscape. The HANDMAIDENS, Motee and Elle, approach PADME as the SHADOW OF A FIGURE moves in the background. C-3PO is standing nearby.<\/em><\/p>\n PADME MOTEE C-3PO stands, confused, as the HANDMAIDENS turn and exit.<\/em><\/p>\n C-3PO PADME The golden droid turns and exits.<\/em><\/p>\n PADME stands and watches the sunset. The SHADOWY FIGURE moves toward her. She senses something.<\/em><\/p>\n ANAKIN PADME jumps and turns around.<\/em><\/p>\n PADME He sits next to her on the bench.<\/em><\/p>\n ANAKIN PADME ANAKIN PADME She puts his hand on her belly.<\/em><\/p>\n ANAKIN They laugh.<\/em><\/p>\n PADME ANAKIN PADME ANAKIN PADME ANAKIN PADME ANAKIN PADME ANAKIN PADME ANAKIN PADME ANAKIN PADME ANAKIN They look in each other’s eyes.<\/em><\/p>\n ANAKIN PADME is startled at this.<\/em><\/p>\n PADME PADME smiles. ANAKIN is a little embarrassed.<\/em><\/p>\n PADME This next scene is quite powerful. It’s not that the scene itself is powerful by definition, it just mentions Anakin and his obsession with power. Padm\u00e9, naive as she always was, never sees anything wrong with this. Let me clarify: it’s not that she’s completely naive about everything, but she’s eternally hopeful that things will always work out for the best.<\/p>\n Again, we see the underlying theme that Anakin is (unnecessarily) jealous of Obi-Wan. Padm\u00e9 doesn’t pick up on that either. Come to think of it, she doesn’t pick up on much of anything close to home, does she? She’s very astute in her work environment, but the opposite in her personal life.<\/p>\n Here’s the extended version of what I call the “power” scene from the screenplay:<\/p>\n ANAKIN PADME ANAKIN PADME looks at him for a moment. ANAKIN seems tense.<\/em><\/p>\n PADME ANAKIN She continues to walk to the bedroom, he follows.<\/em><\/p>\n PADME ANAKIN PADME ANAKIN PADME ANAKIN PADME ANAKIN PADME ANAKIN PADME They stop in front of the window in the bedroom. ANAKIN puts his hand on her belly.<\/em><\/p>\n ANAKIN PADME ANAKIN PADME ANAKIN PADME ANAKIN PADME looks ANAKIN in the eye.<\/em><\/p>\n PADME They embrace and kiss.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n The next scene is definitely one that took me by surprise when I first saw it. It was a scene totally devoid of dialogue outside of the voice-overs and reminded me of Lucas’ THX-1138<\/em> days. This was real, emotional film making using imagery and feelings as opposed to dialogue. That’s why I wasn’t too upset to learn that this dialogue was removed, although I liked the use of Padm\u00e9’s line from Episode II<\/em>. That was a nice touch. I also like the fact that Anakin didn’t talk to himself in the film version. It was much more emotional to have him run out without speaking.<\/p>\n Here’s the scene where Anakin and Padm\u00e9 connect from across town as it appears in the published screenplay:<\/p>\n 125 INT. CORUSCANT-JEDI COUNCIL\/PADME’S APARTMENT-EARLY EVENING<\/strong><\/p>\n (INTERCUT)<\/em><\/p>\n PADME is alone in her apartment, thinking of Anakin. ANAKIN sits alone in the Jedi Council Chamber thinking of PADME.<\/em><\/p>\n PALPATINE (V.O.) PADME C-3PO ANAKIN ANAKIN rushes out of the Council Chamber and to his speeder. The hangar door opens and he lifts off.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n In the finished film, the following scene starts with Padm\u00e9 running out to meet Anakin (Scene 162) and Scene 161 isn’t shown at all. It’s not much but poor C-3PO loses even more screen time in both of the scenes. That’s a shame too, because I enjoy 3PO’s paranoia about “banishing all droids”.<\/p>\n The real meat and potatoes of the deleted dialogue here, however, is Anakin informing Padm\u00e9 that she needs to start distancing herself from the loyalist senators. They’re all going to be “dealt with” and Anakin is so lost that he thinks his friendship with Palpatine can get her off the hook. Had Anakin not killed her, Palpatine would have surely devised a way for her to die at some point.<\/p>\n Here’s the scripted version:<\/p>\n 161 INT. CORUSCANT-PADME\u2019SAPARTMENT-PRE-DAWN C-3PO PADME turns and rushes to the bedroom.<\/em><\/p>\n <\/p>\n 162 EXT. CORUSCANT-PADME’S APARTMENT-VERANDA-PRE-DAWN THREEPIO PADME rushes onto the veranda as ANAKIN exits his GREEN JEDI FIGHTER. They embrace.<\/em><\/p>\n PADME ANAKIN PADME C-3PO continues to talk to R2-D2 on the GREEN FIGHTER.<\/em><\/p>\n C-3PO ARTOO SQUEAKS and BEEPS.<\/em><\/p>\n C-3PO ANAKIN PADME ANAKIN C-3PO leans over and whispers to ARTOO.<\/em><\/p>\n C-3PO ARTOO BEEPS rather loudly. \n The Chancellor’s Transport races through the city and heads for the Senate Office Building landing platform. Waiting on the landing platform is a LONE JEDI. The Transport lands, and CHANCELLOR PALPATINE emerges with FOUR ROYAL GUARDS and MAS AMEDDA. The FOUR ROYAL GUARDS move off in another direction as PALPATINE greets ANAKIN, who has been waiting for him. <\/em><\/p>\n

\nsure your Master will do fine.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/a>\u00a0<\/a><\/a><\/a><\/a><\/a><\/p>\n<\/a>During the first half of the film, Palpatine is still at work sowing the seeds of jealousy in Anakin, hinting to the fact that Obi-Wan was under the influence of a certain female Senator. Anakin is left to put the pieces together but as his paranoia grows, he starts to suspect Obi-Wan more and more.<\/p>\n<\/a>I like the scene I’m including here for a few reasons. First, it shows the concern Obi-Wan has for Anakin which at this point might just be overkill but why not have it in there for good measure. Second, I like the way it reinforces the fact that Obi-Wan and Padm\u00e9 actually are good, platonic friends. You don’t get that vibe from the other films at all. Third, I like how it mirrors (and contrasts) the scene that comes later where Obi-Wan visits her with the real<\/em> bad news. In this scene, he proves to her that he’s a good friend by keeping their secret, but in the later scene, he basically says he’s going off to kill her husband… and she just about throws her friendship with Obi-Wan out the window over it.<\/p>\n

Looking back, it’s probably fair to say that Anakin and Padm\u00e9’s marriage was one huge mistake.\u00a0 I mean, it didn’t work out too well in the end, right? He lost most of his body parts and became an anti-Jedi, while she ended up dead. Makes marriage today seem like a walk in the park, doesn’t it? Anyhow, most of the scenes included in this section are here to document any deleted bits having to do with Anakin and Padm\u00e9.<\/p>\n
